ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR RECEIVES A $5000 RESEARCH GRANT TO TRANSLATE CHINESE CLASSICISTS

JAMAICA, N.Y.--Dr. Shin-shun Liu, Research Professor at the Center of Asian Studies at St. John's University, has been awarded a $5000 research grant to translate the works of eight masters of Chinese prose.
The grant was awarded to Dr. Liu by the National Translation Center in Austin, Texas, which was founded in 1965 with the support of the Ford Foundation to aid students of world literature.
Dr. Liu said that this project, which will include two months of research at the National Central Library of the Republic of China in Taiwan will involve the annotation and translation will be incorporated into a book, which the Oxford University Press plans to publish next year.
Dr. Paul K.T. Sih, Director of the St. John's Center of Asian Studies, which is sponsoring the research project, said that the 60 works will provide a representative cross-section of Chinese prose for the periods, and will be of great assistance to the growing number of students in Chinese literature.
Dr. Liu, who earned his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, M.A. from Harvard University and ph.D. from Columbia University, joined the St. John's faculty in 1963. He is a former Ambassador of the Republic of China to Canada and Mexico, and also a former Representative of China to the United Nations Trusteeship Council. His latest book, entitled One Hundred and One Chinese Poems, was published by Oxford University Press in November, 1967, and its second edition will appear in the summer of 1968.
Recently, Dr. Liu was named "Academician" of the Chinese Academy, an academic honor bestowed only upon leading Chinese scholars.
