蔣彝被英國人視為一個傳奇，他不但在其《中國眼光》一書中從西方角度解釋了東方主義，同時也解釋了中國書法的結構、起源及技巧，以及東西方抽象美學的關係，並且與超現實主義結合在一起。
蔣彝論說中國書法美學時用了簡單一句話「有美感是因為他們是以美感標准和原理来創造的」，書中最好的例子是中國偉大書法家的洞察力及創造力構成其特色形態以達致抽象的美，他們利用直線、曲線、角以及凌亂感塑造出空間感，而且還利用了堂皇的與熟練的技術，因此我們在中國書法中可以看到一個文明的傳統及靈魂。

Chinese Calligraphy

To Britain Chiang Yee is more than a name. In twenty years he has become a legend. Not only has he interpreted the East to the West in that brilliant book The Chinese Eye, but he has held a xenophilic mirror to the Occident in a series of searching travel books. The reprint of Chinese Calligraphy is most welcome. Apart from dealing with the structure,origin and technique, the chapter on the Abstract Beauty of Chinese Calligraphy sums up the relationship of eastern and western abstract art, its association with surrealism, and, as pointed out by Sir Herbert Read in a sympathetic introduction, with the "Organic abstraction" of Soulanges and Hartung.

The superb examples which follow in his book show with what insight and originality the great Chinese calligraphers have conceived characters and forms which achieve abstract beauty by line and curve and angle and mess alone in relation to space, and with what superb skill and technical mastery they have executed what they have conceived. Behind this, of course, lies much more than the work of individuals. The culture of a great people, the tradition and spirit of a major civilization, are to be found in Chinese calligraphy.

蔣彝先生一生生平年表 (收錄於Who's Who 1968)
講述蔣彝先生從早期讀的大學，以及他的經歷，還有他到倫敦大學擔任講師的學經歷等等，而晚年的蔣彝遨遊歐洲四方，將所見的都親筆紀錄親筆畫下來，後來就出版一本本的畫記。其也受美國許多知名大學聘為講師，地位非常受重視，其多本畫記也成為西洋旅行文學中的經典。
