波爾州立大學助理教授張德光解釋了波爾州立大學提供亞洲研究作副修科目的主要原因，他指出韓戰、越戰及中國共產主義的崛起使美國人意識到亞洲政治發展的重要性，同時張德光指出學生若能選修這科可以增加對亞洲的地理、經濟、宗教、歷史、人類學，甚至古代柔道認識。
張德光稱正計劃在亞洲一所大學進行夏季實地考察。而科學及人文學院院長Robert L.Charmin已經舉行了一次到印度馬德拉斯大學的旅行。
夏季學會到目前為止仍然在計劃當中，最終目標是要開放給對亞洲研究有興趣的學生及在高中任教希望增加對亞洲的知識的老師。預計1972年開
始首次夏季學會。
張德光及其委員會計劃在未來課程推行中對亞洲事務進行研究計劃及年度會議，他指出會議可以為波爾州立大學的重要亞洲問題座談會培育出更多亞洲研究領域的專家。

Chang says understanding of Asia is critical; lists BSN program

"The Korean War, the Vietnam War and the rise of Communist China are concerns of the peoples of the world and have brought home to Americans the importance of political developments in Asia," said Teh-Kuang Chang, associate professor of political science at Ball State.
Chang gave these as primary reasons for development of the Asian studies minor now being offered at Ball State.
